The Delaware County Hero Scholarship Fund will be holding two of its annual events, the Hero Scholarship Basketball All-Star Games and the Hero Bowl Football Game.

Tuesday, April 5, 2016  To all of our Friends and Members of the Delaware County Emergency Service Family,

We would like to call attention to two upcoming sporting events that support each and every one of us. The Delaware County Hero Scholarship Fund will be holding two of its annual events, the Hero Scholarship Basketball All-Star Games and the Hero Bowl Football Game.

What is so important about these games is the "Hero Scholarship Fund of Delaware County, Inc," which was established in 1977 by Delaware County Council to provide college education scholarships for children of police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel who die in the line of duty.

Below is the Delaware County Council Fact Sheet for the upcoming games. We are asking that you all try and make an attempt to attend at least one of the Basketball Games on April 9th at Chi Chester High School or the Hero Bowl on June 2nd at Cardinal O'hara High School in Marple Township.

There is more information in the fact sheet below, feel free to reach out if you have any questions to any of the people listed in the fact sheet or to us and we will put you in touch with them.

Lets all try to attend and show our support and thanks!

FACT SHEET: March 22, 2016
Announcement: 2016 Hero Scholarship Basketball All-Star games
Council member: MIKE CULP

Each year, some of the top student athletes in our county participate in athletic competitions to benefit the Hero Scholarship Fund. This fund provides college education scholarships for children of police, fire fighters and emergency medical personnel who died in the line of duty.

Not only does the Hero Scholarship Fund benefit young people, but the sports events bring young athletes together for a great cause. The 2016 Hero Scholarship Basketball All-Star Games will be held on Saturday evening, April 9th at Chi Chester High School.
The other main event is the Hero Bowl football game set for June 2nd 2016
Today’s announcement focuses on the double-header Hero Basketball Game.

Before I bring up the committee members, I’d like to stress the importance of this Hero Fund. One of the greatest tragedies a community can suffer is the loss of a police officer or emergency responder.
These men and women are police officers, firefighters and emergency responders. But they are also fathers, husbands and friends. As the name of our fund indicates, they are heroes. And the Hero Scholarship Fund is one way we can help families in Delaware County if the worst happens.

Today, we are pleased to have Collingdale Borough Police Chief Robert Adams, Chairman of the Hero Bowl Basketball Committee, to outline the program for the all-star double-header Hero Basketball Game on April 9th.

He is accompanied by CID Detective Robert T. Lythgoe Jr., President of the Delaware County Hero Scholarship Fund, and Hero basketball committee member Ed Beebe.

Two games are planned featuring seniors. The all-star girls game will be played at 6 p.m. The boys tip-off set to begin at 8 p.m. Each squad will consist of 16 players. Admission is $5 each.
The teams will be broken down into East and West squads and coached by Delaware County varsity high school coaches. The coaches are: Monique Boykins from Penn Wood High School, Girls East; Bridget DeCave from Haverford High school, Girls West; Jack Concannon from Bonner Prendie High School, Boys East; and Buzzy Wood from Chi Chester High School and host, Boys West. The referees for the game are PIAA varsity officials who are either in law enforcement or related to a law enforcement official. They are volunteering their time to officiate.

The Hero Scholarship Fund of Delaware County, Inc, was established in 1977 by County Council to provide college education scholarships for children of police, fire fighters and emergency medical personnel who die in the line of duty.
Since it’s founding, 34 young people have received scholarships through the Hero Scholarship Fund.
